an absolute beast Nov 07, 2009 You have to hold it in your hands to truly get a sense of this size and power of this drill. It weighs about 14 pounds. It feels like a solid chunk of metal.
Everything works as it should. As another reviewer noted, it is quite difficult to see the numbers on the variable speed dial. At the same time, you really don't need to see them. Rolling the dial with your thumb up or down changes speeds just fine. The Jacobs keyed chuck is very strong and tightens down like a vise. Bear in mind that you're not going to be whipping bits in and out of this thing, so the extra 10 seconds it takes to tighten down the chuck with the key is really no big deal. The twistlock cord is a very nice feature, as is the soft start. This is a beautiful, very well made tool that is ready for serious work.
Keep in mind also that you have to, have to brace this thing when using big bits. I'm a pretty strong fellow but this drill will spin like a top if the bit catches. When it does, it's very easy to hurt your arm or shoulder.
I've used a Milwaukee 0302 for some work, and it's quite strong, but nowhere in the league of this drill.
I bought this drill partly to stir up driveway sealer. I called Milwaukee customer service and asked if the 0302 or 0234 would be up to the task. No way, the fellow said, only the 1663 or similar units have the gears and low speed to do the job. From Amazon I purchased Ace Heavy Duty Paint Mixer (25080) mixer attachments and they look great. They're quite heavy and seem to be of good quality steel, and they're deep enough to do a 5 gallon bucket. Keep in mind that regular old paint mixing attachments are often not strong enough to mix settled driveway sealer. Spend a bit more to get the heavy duty stuff that really works. The last time I mixed up the sealer I didn't use a drill, just a wood rod, and I was quite disappointed with the results. Even the gel, no mix stuff really does need to be mixed with a tool to truly blend it for a good application.
You do not get a case with the drill, and for a $260 drill I think that's wrong. I know Milwaukee is trying to hold costs down, but a $260 drill should come with a $6 plastic case. My other quibble is that the drill came with a chip out of the body. It's a minor thing, and due, I think, to substandard Amazon packaging. And one final thing: it's made in China. Nothing against the Chinese, but I was hoping at $260 it would be made here in the USA.
I also plan on using this to drill holes for tree aeration. If you're interested in such things, I warn you that the augers for sale on Amazon are mostly not up to the task unless you have very loose, loamy soil. If you're dealing with heavy clay soil, the aluminum augers on Amazon will spin inside the chuck and will make a mess of things. I found some great equipment at gardenauger dot com that, while quite expensive, is high quality steel and very up to the task.
Buy this beast. You'll love it and in 40 years you'll give it to your son, provided he doesn't swipe it from you before then!

BigAss Drill Motor Feb 08, 2008 It's a hoss. Never wimps out. Only thing I don't like is the speed selector switch...monocolored black can't see settings, no clicks to help feel setting, in the wrong place for comfort, and you're not supposed to adjust on the fly. RPM governor-sensor stuff doesn't work either but I didn't figger it would. Still very happy with it.
Built like a tank!!!! Jul 12, 2005 I love the soft start feature that this drill has. It helps manage initial start up torque. THis drill mixes heavy consistency materials quite well. Speed dial is great, you can dial speed back to as low as 115rpm. This is a nice feature for mixing stains and paints. Drill is well balanced and handles well for a drill this size. Drill is extremely well made.!!!UPDATE:10/15/06 Been using 1663-20 compact drill to plant bulbs, flowers etc w/ power augers I bought at Forestry supply. I use a 2" and a 5" depending on bulb or plant size. They have 1/2" hex shanks and are made extremely well. My 1663-20 has bent lesser earth(ground) augers. Drill is Heavy Duty enough for this application as long as you atre careful of rocks which could bind auger. I use speed 2 on the speed dial.UPDATE: JUNE 09- Be careful to tighten chuck and chuck screw using drill in high torque appications in reverse. The slightest gap between chuck and drill causes screw to break in half leaving chuck on bit and drill w/ you!!!

This is a super tool! Jan 26, 2001 If you want power, you can't do any better than this. This has a variable speed dial and is literally twice as powerful as a Milwaukee magnum hole shooter. I got one of these used at a pawn shop and I really like it.
